Where do you start?
Here's one approach: You literally can start from scratch with a blank piece of paper (and it helps to have sticky notes on hand, too). This isn't a process that will happen overnight. Look at this collection to sort out the feel, or the tone, of your home.

Draw the rooms of your home and see how the furniture and other features fit inside them. Try to do this in a way that the rooms and levels really do fit together in scale.
Now you can draw your floor plans, and then fill in with elevations(sometimes, people do this in reverse). Then draw in details, such as entryways and decks. Consider the dimensions of the rooms and the windows, to ensure that everything could fit together.
Now you have an outline of your home. Measure whether what you want in each room will actually fit. Measure the square footage and continue to tweak the rooms, the details and height.
When you have the right feel for your home, and the right ceiling height, and the right number of rooms, you might to use a home-design website to help you with the details.

In the library and on the Internet, there are thousands of plans for beautiful homes, from the small to the spacious. Some computer programs allow you to design your home using custom software, and make the home exactly what you want. These programs also offer color sketches of the homes in realistic settings, 3-D views, and project estimates.

Take advantage of computer resources, your own imagination, and soon the home you've always wanted will begin to take shape.
