Should I Install a Patio For My Home?

Should you install a patio for your home?  With financing available for any kind of construction or remodeling that will enhance the value of your home, the answer is a resounding “Yes!”.  Whether you build your own home or are renovating an existing home, the addition of a patio will expand your living space to the great outdoors.

Experts agree that the actual construction of the patio—whether you do it yourself or hire a contractor to do it—is a relatively easy task that doesn’t take a lot of time.  It’s the planning process that’s key. A well-designed patio is a reflection of your taste, style, creativity and originality. Use the patio designs you find in magazines, books and on the Internet as guides. Building on them to create a truly personal space.

Think about what the primary purpose of the patio will be, and tailor your patio ideas to that use.  For example, if you like to garden, you may want to incorporate planters into your patio landscape. If you like to entertain, incorporate features like a barbeque pit or a grill.  A patio can be a simple slab of concrete or slate. But to make the most of your outdoor living space, you may want to add amenities like low-voltage lighting, fountains, or fireplaces. Let your lifestyle and needs dictate the details you choose to add.

The next consideration is location. A level surface is one of the most important prerequisites when it comes to installing any type of patio, especially a concrete patio. But if your property has a slight slope to it, there is no reason why the patio can’t be on one or more levels.  Also consider:  What views will the patio will be facing, and do you need more landscaping there?  Think about where the sun rises and sets. How much natural shade will be available when you decide to relax on the patio?

Once you’ve chosen the right spot, make sure you size your patio for its purposes. Your patio will be a failure if it is too small.  Design it to accommodate the furniture and people that will occupy it.   The best way to size a patio is to buy the furniture that will be used in this outdoor room and actually place it on the ground. Sit in the furniture and make spacing adjustments so no person violates the space of another. Use spray paint to mark the outline of the patio directly on the ground.

The material used to construct the patio can have an enormous impact on the final look. Brick, concrete, slate, and flagstone are among the most popular patio surfaces, either alone or in combination. When selecting materials, consider factors beyond cost. It's always a good idea to match the style of your home, if possible. And if you'll be dining regularly, select a surface that is smooth enough to keep tables and chairs from wobbling.
